Our gig at The Academy is shaping up to be something else, but we would say that wouldn’t we? After our sold out date there in 2016 the tickets are flying out the door for our return to the Dublin venue on April 8th. Make sure to be there by getting your tickets in advance from here. This time around we’re joined by Sligo hip hop outfit This Side Up and #BuzzersBursary winners Konmak X Marty Guilfoyle for a night that is shaping up to be something else. But you’ve probably know that already 😉
So how about getting to know our guests a little more?
100% Hip Hop from the West coast of Ireland, This Side Up released their debut album ‘Full Fat’ at the end of 2016. The album has been a while in the making! This Side Up started as a vinyl night for the heads in Sligo back sometime around 2008. Turntables, pints and ceiling slapping good craic in McGarrigles. In a place brimming with music and a colourful turn of phrase hip hop came naturally. It makes sense! Within no time a live rap cypher grew into an original set. Shortly after that again This Side Up were spinning around the country in a transit. Things got rowdy!
Following the success of their ‘3075’ in 2015, TSU abandoned everything to work on more tunes. They set up ‘Citóg Studios’ in Dublin and got to work producing ‘Full Fat’. ’Full Fat’ is the album name and the style. Gallons of rap packed full of substance, from late night bangers to sparse headphone tunes. This music goes beyond cliché and subverts the norms of the classic rap sound. It’s 100% homebrewed music from the West of Ireland. It’s Full Fat! Website. Facebook. Twitter. YouTube. Spotify.
Together since 2015, Konmak and Marty Guilfoyle have been releasing a series of tracks on Zulu Records, Club Educate, Synthphobia and their current label Plasmapool. Seven of which have made the most Shazammed tracks in in Ireland, more than any other act in the country, and the tracks have ended up in the sets of some well known DJs including Joe Stone, Don Diablo, Timmy Trumpet, AK9, John Gibbons, Bakermat, Jewelz & Sparks. 2017 is already off to flying start as the lads have secured two collaborations with a yet to be revealed Dutch DJ along with signing an official remix to Subtone.
Between producing and releasing tracks the pair can be found playing at clubs across the country including The Wright Venue in Dublin, to The Foundry Carlow & Waterford, Karma Galway & Athlone. During the 16 years DJing experience betwene them, they’ve supported acts like Uberjakd, D.O.D, Sash, Basshunter, The Disciples, Tough Love, Djs From Mars, Laidback Luke, Will Sparks, Joel Fletcher, Example and Steve Aoki. Not forgetting Marty also finds the time to host a mixshow on Spin 1038 and Spin South West. Twitter. Soundcloud. Spotify.
